Acatenango day hike I did the Acatenango day hike with my best friend and I would never have survived it without her and... read moreI did the Acatenango day hike with my best friend and I would never have survived it without her and our unbelievable guide, Juan Pablo. Most people do the hike over 2 days but due to time constraints, we did it in one day. Make no mistake, this hike is very hard. It is maybe less than 1% flat and the rest of the time you are on an incline of at least 45°. But Trekking Guatemala and Juan Pablo made it possible for us to make it all the way up and all the way down safely and with a lot of encouragement. We had previously booked with OX Expeditions but they required at least 4 people to run the hike, and we were the only ones signed up. Trekking Guatemala has no minimum, were extremely fast in their responses to inquiries, and provided us everything we needed for the trip. Our guide gave us trekking poles (a must), prepared a fantastic homemade lunch, and had extra snacks, warm layers, and head lamps for us if we needed. This was the most physically demanding activity I have ever done, taking almost 11 hours start to finish, but Trekking Guatemala and Juan Pablo made it the best experience it could be. read less Guatemalan hiking The Trek was incredible. The food was delicious, his knowledge was on point. We had a group of 10 with 5 kids ages 12-15. The hike is tough but we all powered through. Can't speak highly enough of Trek Guat, our contact and organizer, Thomas and our Guide Mario (aka Papito)! And last but not least, the porters were amazing. Overall, a life changing experience. Sure, we were sore for a few days afterwards but it was worth it. The acatenango overnight hike was tough, I was nervous about the altitude and even felt a little sick at one point and our guides Tomas and Jaime genuinely cared and helped me out, and kept us all entertained and motivated. It was the perfect small group, they provided everything we needed, delicious food, and sleeping gear. And to top it all off, everyone working with the company we encountered was so so kind and helpful! Both trips were fantastic and you are in good hands with Trek Guatemala regardless of the tour you decide to book with them. The food included in the tours is fresh and for everyone regardless of dietary restrictions. They arranged to have a driver pick us up at the airport in Guatemala City and drop us off with our guide, Diego. They took our bags up the mountain by truck and we hiked 2 hours to get the base camp. There are stairs about 2/3 of the way up, then you walk on a drivable path to base camp. My phone said it was about 50 flights and about 4 miles. The tent and beds were already set up, there was wonderful food, drinks, and fellowship. At night it gets. Old so they built a fire for us and put hot water bottles in the beds- that was wonderful! The views are fantastic and you can see and hear Feugo Volcano erupting! So cool. She was fantastic and found us an authentic restaurant for lunch. We met our guide, Diego, for the hike. He was knowledgeable, fun, spoke great English, and more importantly for a 57 year old, he hiked at my pace. The camping was amazing. Great tents overlooking. Fuego saw the orange lava at night. This small group was much more pleasurable than some of the groups of a dozen or more we saw. Our guide, Juan Pablo, was top notch! I cannot recommend him enough! He was knowledgeable and did a great job of seeing us to the top. The food was home-made and the tents were set up for us, with sleeping bags and mats already laid out. Juan Pablo did such a great job answering our questions and teaching us about hiking steep trails. This was great for me because I live at sea level on flat ground! We had an awesome trip, got to see Fuego erupt, a gorgeous sunrise and more. As a large 35 year old man, this hike definitely pushed me to my limits BUT Mario and the other guides/porters were all really helpful, enthusiastic, and kind. The food and accommodations were superior to any other guide company that I could tell. We were also in a much smaller group of 10 people with 2 guides compared to other companies with 30 hikers per guide.
