Antigua [av_dropcap1]wurde1534 von spanischen Konquistadoren gegründet[/av_dropcap1]und gilt als eine der historischsten und bezauberndsten Städte Lateinamerikas. Einst war Antigua das politische und religiöse Epizentrum von ganz Mittelamerika und beherbergte fast 40 hoch aufragende Kathedralen, die durch ein Netz von Kopfsteinpflasterstraßen in einem von Kaffeefincas und drei Vulkanen dominierten Tal verbunden sind.
Ein schweres Erdbeben zerstörte die Stadt im Jahr 1773 und Antigua geriet für die nächsten 100 Jahre in Vergessenheit. Im späten19. Jahrhundert kehrten die Familien zurück und bauten Antigua Stein für Stein in seiner früheren Pracht wieder auf. Anstatt die Kathedralen zu begraben, beschloss die Stadt, viele von ihnen zu reparieren und die übrigen in ihrem verfallenen Zustand zu erhalten, was Antigua eine gleichermaßen majestätische wie geheimnisvolle Ausstrahlung verleiht.
Heute ist Antigua ein Tourismusziel von Weltrang mit ganzjährig frühlingshaftem Wetter und einer Vielzahl von Aktivitäten. Zwischen den Ruinen finden Sie Fünf-Sterne-Restaurants, malerische Hotels, Textilien und Kunsthandwerk im Überfluss sowie eine lebhafte Café- und Barszene.
